Last summer in Nantucket,

my dog sitter called to say that Ashton’s leg “won’t come down.”  I flew home the next day and my Vet’s X-Ray confirmed that he had torn his tendon, needing immediate surgery. After much research that night, I concluded that I would forgo the surgery,  use  supplements and allow the injury to try and heal.  I also determined that Ashton had jumped off my high bed causing the injury.  (Today you wouldn’t know Ashton  had such a serious injury – and he can keep up with his sister, Brandy.)  I knew I needed to rectify the high bed issue.  Again, research located two kinds of available steps.  One, with wood slippery steps…another accident waiting to happen.  The second, carpeted, lightweight, unsturdy, steps that were just plain…UGLY!

§

As an interior designer, I design and manufacturer the majority of my client’s custom, hand-benched furniture.  I quickly went to work designing a step for Ashton and Brandy to jump up and down my bed.
At  5’2”, I too, had trouble climbing in and out of bed, so I needed a  suitable solution for all three of us.  My first design was the hand carved Tuscany/Spanish bed step.

§

Client’s, and friends visiting my home then wanted bed steps.  Word got around the doggie park and, dog owners also wanted my dog bed steps for multiple reasons such as:

  • they could no longer lift their dogs without strain and pain,
  • their “babies” were puppies or getting older and couldn’t jump onto their beds or sofas easily -- or at all,
  • their dog(s) had arthritis, tendonitis,  hip dysphasia,  back injuries, etc.,
  • they wanted to avoid  future injuries,
  • they, too, had trouble getting into their higher bed (due to the increased height of the new mattresses),
  • they wanted a prayer kneeler,
  • they couldn’t stand putting UGLY  carpeted dog steps next to their beautiful furniture – thus destroying the look of a room.

§

Now I needed to design and produce various styles, widths, heights and make sure they were safe, not only for dogs of all shapes and sizes, but also their owners.  Today, my dog bed steps are shipped all over the world!
It is my hope that these beautiful dog bed steps not only complement your home(s), but more important also prevent injuries and pain to your  precious “babies” --  who love us unconditionally, greet us affectionately each time we  walk in the door, and bring us total joy.  The only thing they ask of us in return is love, food, exercise and protection from possible harm.

The End

Much Love, Pamela, Ashton, Sophie & Lily
